Prof. Sir Brian Pippard 1920 - 2008

Prof. Brian Pippard, who died in September 2008 aged 88, was Cavendish Professor of Physics at the University of Cambridge from 1971 to 1984 and the first President of Clare Hall, from 1966 to 1973. He was a researcher in condensed matter physics, spending his career as a member of Quantum Matter (formerly the LTP group).

Brian Pippard will be remembered particularly as the first experimenter to map a Fermi surface, for his non-local theories of electromagnetic response in normal metals and superconductors, and as dynamic Head of Physics in Cambridge from 1971 to 1982.

This site contains archival material and media from the Pippard Memorial Meeting, which took place at the Cavendish on May 11 2009.

Remembering Brian

Malcolm Longair and John Waldram have written a comprehensive Royal Society Memoir on Brian discussing his life and his many contributions to physics.

Pippard Reminiscences

A wonderful collection of reminiscences from some of Brian's many friends and colleagues is available to read. They give a flavour of what it was like to work and study alongside him, and a snapshot of life at the Cavendish during his years as Cavendish Professor.

Video and Audio of Brian

An edited version of Brian's after-dinner speech on his seventieth birthday, in response to John Ziman's proposal of health (19.5 MB mp3 recording, 15 minutes).

There is also an edited version of two recent interviews of Brian (90 MB mp4 movie, 35 minutes, as shown over lunch at the meeting)

One of these interviews of Brian is also available in its entirety (100 minutes) from the University archive.

Pippard Memorial Lectures

The Brian Pippard memorial event was held in May 2009, and lectures were given by some of the many scientists who were influenced by Brian's work.

Memorial Meeting Part I (179 MB mp4 movie, 70 minutes, reminiscence and John Waldram's lecture)

Memorial Meeting Part II (152 MB mp4 movie, 60 minutes, further reminiscence and John Clarke's lecture)

Memorial Meeting Part III (210 MB mp4 movie, 90 minutes, lectures by Paul Richards, Nigel Hussey and Mike Sutherland)
